7th March 1975: Wings Add Overdubs to "Rock Show" in Los Angeles
On 7th March 1975, Wings continued work on the song Rock Show during sessions for their album Venus and Mars.
The session took place at Studio 3 of Wally Heider Recording, with Paul McCartney producing and engineer Alan O'Duffy handling the recording.
A Visitor in the Studio
Among those present at the session was Ken Caillat, a studio engineer from Sunset Sound.
Caillat had originally visited because Sunset Sound had been booked for an orchestral overdub session on 1st March 1975. While at Wally Heider's studio, he was played the tracks Wings were working on and ended up staying to observe the session.
McCartney Takes Control in the Studio
During the session, McCartney attempted to refine the rhythm section by having Jimmy McCulloch and Joe English double-track their guitar and drum parts.
However, he remained dissatisfied with the results.
According to Ken Caillat, McCartney began stepping in to demonstrate exactly how he wanted the parts played:
"Paul didn't like the part the drummer was playing, so he went out and played it himself. Then after that he didn't like the part that Denny Laine, the guitarist, had played, so he went out and showed Denny how it should go. Then suddenly he was playing all of the instruments!"
— Ken Caillat, Making Rumours
This hands-on approach was typical of McCartney in the studio, where he often experimented with different arrangements until he found the right feel for the song.
Jimmy McCulloch's Raw Drum Performance
During a break in the session, guitarist Jimmy McCulloch sat behind the drum kit and began playing heavy, aggressive beats along with the track.
McCartney immediately recognised that the rougher sound gave the song the energy it needed.
Tape operator Alan O'Duffy quickly began recording as McCulloch continued playing. While the guitarist — reportedly in high spirits at the time — hammered out the rhythm, McCartney simultaneously added a bass guitar part.
The impromptu performance became an important element in shaping the final version of the song.
McCartney's Later Reflections
Despite the progress made during the session, McCartney later admitted he was never entirely satisfied with the track.
"We had a lot of trouble with the drumming. We ended up with Jimmy overdubbing a track and he had much more of a dirty feel – he was out of his skull at the time – but he helped to give it a dirty feel. But in truth we never really made that track come off to me."
— Paul McCartney, Melody Maker, 1st April 1978
A Key Track on Venus and Mars
"Rock Show" would later appear on the 1975 album Venus and Mars, which became one of Wings' biggest commercial successes.
The song itself celebrates the excitement of live rock concerts, name-checking cities such as New York, Los Angeles and Detroit, and became a fan favourite during Wings' mid-1970s tours.
The studio experimentation on 7th March 1975 helped shape the energetic sound that made the track a highlight of the album.
