7th March 1973: Wings Rehearse for the James Paul McCartney TV Special

On 7th March 1973, Paul McCartney and Wings gathered at Elstree Studios for the second day of rehearsals for the television special James Paul McCartney.

The programme was produced by ATV and was designed as a major television showcase for McCartney and his band during the era of their album Red Rose Speedway.

Preparing the Concert Segment

During the rehearsal sessions at Elstree, Wings worked on the concert-style segment that would later appear in the special.

Although the full performance would not be filmed until 18th March 1973, the rehearsal footage captured during these sessions proved valuable. The audio recorded on 7th March was later used for the final soundtrack of the concert sequence in the finished programme.

The rehearsals allowed the band to refine their performance before filming, ensuring the music segment had the energy of a live show while still maintaining television production quality.

A Major Television Event

The James Paul McCartney special was conceived as a large-scale television introduction to Wings, which was still a relatively new band at the time.

In addition to the concert performances, the programme included:

  • interviews with McCartney
  • documentary-style segments
  • musical performances by Wings

The show helped promote McCartney's post-Beatles career and the success of Red Rose Speedway.

Broadcast and Later Release

The completed special premiered first in the United States before being shown in Britain:

📺 First broadcast (USA): 16 April 1973

📺 UK broadcast: 10 May 1973

Decades later, the programme was restored and released on DVD as part of the 2018 super deluxe edition of Red Rose Speedway.

Wings on Television in the Early 1970s

At the time of these rehearsals, McCartney was still establishing Wings as a major touring and recording act following the breakup of The Beatles.

Television specials like James Paul McCartney played an important role in introducing the band to a wider audience and showcasing their live performance style.

The rehearsals on 7th March 1973 were therefore a key step in preparing one of the earliest major TV appearances of the Wings era.
