7th March 1972: Wings Record "When The Night" for Red Rose Speedway

On 7th March 1972, Wings continued sessions for their second album Red Rose Speedway by recording When the Night at Olympic Studios in Barnes, London.

The session took place in Studio One, with production by Glyn Johns and engineering by Phil Chapman.

Recording the Backing Track

The band began the day by recording the backing track, built around Paul McCartney's grand piano.

The lineup for the recording included:

  • Paul McCartney – grand piano
  • Denny Laine – acoustic guitar
  • Henry McCullough – acoustic guitar
  • Linda McCartney – bass notes played on a keyboard
  • Denny Seiwell – drums

The arrangement gave the track a dramatic, piano-driven foundation that would remain central to the finished song.

Denny Seiwell's Distinctive Drum Pattern

Drummer Denny Seiwell later explained how the song's rhythm came together during the session.

Rather than relying on flashy technique, he focused on creating a steady groove that gave the song a strong pulse.

"Most drummers tend to get a bit flash, but good drummers never play a lot of fancy stuff. Buddy Rich is a fantastic drummer, but Elvin Jones plays a lot less and swings a lot more. Drums have to put a heartbeat, a pulse, into a song. I fell into this little loop, an odd drumbeat that repeated itself, and it worked so beautifully for the song."

The repeating rhythm became one of the defining features of the recording.

Adding Vocals

Later in the afternoon session, the band recorded five-part harmony vocals, creating a layered choral effect behind the lead vocal.

Paul McCartney also overdubbed his lead vocal, completing the core structure of the track.

Finishing the Song Later in 1972

Although the main recording was completed on 7th March 1972, the track would receive further work later that year.

Additional overdubs were recorded at AIR Studios toward the end of 1972, bringing "When The Night" to its final form for inclusion on Red Rose Speedway, released in 1973.

A Step Toward a More Polished Wings Sound

The recording sessions for Red Rose Speedway marked a shift toward a more polished and ambitious sound for Wings, following their raw debut album Wild Life.

"When The Night" showcased the band's evolving studio approach, blending McCartney's piano-driven songwriting with strong vocal harmonies and atmospheric production.
