7th March 1967: The Beatles Add Wild Vocal Effects to "Lovely Rita"

On 7th March 1967, The Beatles returned to Studio Two at Abbey Road Studios to continue work on Lovely Rita, destined for their landmark album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Produced by George Martin and engineered by Geoff Emerick, this session marked the third day of recording for the song, following earlier work on 23 and 24 February 1967.

Experimental Backing Vocals

The main focus of the session was adding backing vocals and sound effects onto track four of the tape.

During the recording, John Lennon led Paul McCartney and George Harrison through a series of unusual vocal sounds.

Instead of traditional harmonies, the trio created a collage of noises including:

  • humming
  • sighing
  • screaming
  • groaning
  • moaning

All of these sounds were treated with heavy tape echo, giving the track a surreal and playful atmosphere.

The Famous Comb and Paper Effect

One of the most distinctive sounds recorded during the session came from a simple homemade instrument.

Using hair combs covered with toilet paper, the band created a kazoo-like buzzing sound.

To achieve this effect, Beatles road manager and assistant Mal Evans was sent to retrieve paper from the Abbey Road bathrooms. The paper — stamped "Property of EMI" — was placed over the combs and blown into by the band.

The unusual sound can be heard just before the lyric "When it gets dark I tow your heart away."

Studio Experimentation at Its Peak

By early 1967, The Beatles were pushing studio experimentation further than ever before.

Sessions like this one show how everyday objects and spontaneous ideas were often transformed into musical textures. Combined with the tape echo effects applied during the recording, the vocal noises and comb-and-paper sounds added to the whimsical character of "Lovely Rita".

The track would later appear on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, released in June 1967 — an album widely regarded as one of the most influential in modern music.
