6th March 1970: Ringo Starr Records Final Track for Sentimental Journey

On 6th March 1970, Ringo Starr returned to Morgan Studios in London for the final recording session of his debut solo album Sentimental Journey.

The session, produced by George Martin and engineered by Phil McDonald and Geoff Emerick, ran from 10:00am until midday.

Completing "You Always Hurt The One You Love"

The focus of the session was You Always Hurt the One You Love, a classic popular song that had already been partially recorded during an earlier session.

The backing track and Ringo's vocal had been recorded on 25th February 1970, but several additional elements were added during the 6th March session.

The arrangement was created by renowned British jazz musician Johnny Dankworth, who also contributed a saxophone overdub during the session.

Additional overdubs included:

  • Saxophone – Johnny Dankworth
  • Piano
  • Drums

These additions completed the recording of the track and marked the final recording work for the album.

Recording Alongside McCartney's Solo Work

At the time, Paul McCartney had also been working at Morgan Studios while recording material for his debut solo album McCartney.

The parallel sessions reflected the changing situation within The Beatles in early 1970, with each member increasingly focused on individual projects.

Album Completed Later That Night

With the recording finished by midday, work on Sentimental Journey moved to Abbey Road Studios later that evening.

There, the album was completed during a mixing session, bringing the project to its final stage ahead of its UK release on 27tg March 1970.

Ringo's Nostalgic Solo Debut

Unlike the rock music associated with The Beatles, Sentimental Journey featured traditional pop standards from the pre-rock era — songs that had been popular during Starr's childhood.

The session on 6th March 1970 therefore closed the recording chapter of a unique project that introduced Ringo Starr's solo career with a nostalgic tribute to the music that first inspired him.
