21st February 1961 – The Beatles Live at the The Cavern Club (Lunchtime Show)
Date: Tuesday 21st February 1961
Time: 1.00–2.00pm
Venue: The Cavern Club, Mathew Street, Liverpool
On 21st February 1961, The Beatles made only their second appearance at Liverpool’s Cavern Club. Like their debut on 9th February, it was a lunchtime performance — the format that would soon define their rise on Merseyside.
At this point, the line-up was:
- John Lennon – rhythm guitar, vocals
- Paul McCartney – bass guitar, vocals
- George Harrison – lead guitar
- Stuart Sutcliffe – bass (returning from Hamburg)
- Pete Best – drums
Stuart Sutcliffe’s First Cavern Performance
This performance marked Stuart Sutcliffe’s first appearance at the Cavern Club. He had returned from Hamburg on 20th January 1961 and was back in Liverpool while his fiancée, Astrid Kirchherr, remained in Germany for part of this period before later visiting.
Sutcliffe’s presence is historically important. Although his bass playing was limited technically, his artistic influence — and the Hamburg experience — shaped the band’s image, confidence, and professionalism.
The Sound of Early 1961
Guitarist Geoff Nugent of The Undertakers later recalled:
“The Beatles came on at the Cavern and it was a great sound… The Beatles were raw and vivid and I knew that they would do something… To us as kids, fire regulations meant nothing and it didn’t matter that it was a dirty, stinking sweaty place.”
Electric bass was still uncommon in Liverpool groups in early 1961. The Beatles’ amplification and Hamburg-honed intensity immediately distinguished them from many local acts still rooted in skiffle or traditional jazz.
The Cavern itself — originally a jazz cellar — was in transition. Rock ’n’ roll was gradually overtaking trad jazz bookings, and The Beatles were at the centre of that cultural shift.
A Three-Show Day
21st February 1961 was also the first documented date on which The Beatles performed three times in one day:
- Lunchtime – Cavern Club
- Evening – Casanova Club
- Evening – Litherland Town Hall
Multiple bookings in a single day would soon become routine as demand for the band grew across Liverpool and the Wirral.
The Cavern Numbers
The precise number of Beatles performances at the Cavern remains debated. Conservative documentation confirms at least 155 lunchtime and 125 evening appearances between 9th February 1961 and 3rd August 1963.
The true total may be higher due to incomplete records and informal substitute appearances.
What is certain: the Cavern was the crucible. It was here that:
- Brian Epstein first saw them (9 November 1961).
- Their lunchtime residency built a devoted local following.
- The “Merseybeat” identity crystallised.
Historical Context: February 1961
In February 1961:
- The Beatles had recently returned from their second Hamburg residency.
- They were unsigned and still months away from meeting Epstein.
- Pete Best was on drums; Ringo Starr would not join until August 1962.
- Their repertoire leaned heavily on Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Carl Perkins, and Motown covers.
This was the raw, pre-fame Beatles — loud, leather-clad, and relentless.
For Collectors & Historians
For serious Cavern-era followers:
- Early 1961 setlists likely included “Long Tall Sally,” “Some Other Guy,” “Roll Over Beethoven,” and “A Taste of Honey.”
- Amplification was basic — Vox equipment was not yet standard issue.
- Audience capacity during lunchtime sessions was often squeezed well beyond safe limits.
- Surviving photography from February 1961 is scarce, increasing the significance of documented dates like this one.
