The Beatles & Christmas: A Brief History
Between 1963 and 1969, The Beatles recorded a Christmas message every year for members of their official fan club. The early recordings were cheerful and straightforward — John, Paul, George, and Ringo wishing fans a happy Christmas and thanking them for their support. By 1967, the messages had become something altogether stranger: multi-part audio collages, character voices, surreal sketches, and experimental sound. The 1968 message, titled The Beatles' Christmas Record, ran to over seven minutes.
These recordings — never commercially released during the band's lifetime — are a fascinating document of The Beatles' evolution, from Beatlemania to psychedelia to the fractious final years. They are also, in their own way, deeply charming.
