When Did Ringo Starr Join The Beatles? The Story Behind the Classic Line-Up

When Did Ringo Starr Join The Beatles?

Ringo Starr joined The Beatles on 16 August 1962, replacing drummer Pete Best and completing the line-up that would become world famous.

The decision to bring Starr into the band occurred shortly before the release of the group's first single.

Ringo Starr Before The Beatles

Before joining The Beatles, Ringo Starr was the drummer for Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, a popular Liverpool band that frequently performed in Hamburg.

During this period Starr had already met the Beatles and occasionally performed with them when Pete Best was unavailable.

The Decision to Replace Pete Best

Following the band's first recording session with producer George Martin, concerns were raised about Pete Best's drumming ability.

After discussions between manager Brian Epstein and the band members, it was decided that Best would be replaced.

Ringo Starr's First Performance as a Beatle

Ringo Starr made his first official appearance as a member of The Beatles on 18th August 1962 at a concert in Port Sunlight near Liverpool.

Although some fans initially protested the change, Starr soon became an essential part of the group.

Completing the Classic Beatles Line-Up

With Starr's arrival, the definitive Beatles line-up was established:

  • John Lennon
  • Paul McCartney
  • George Harrison
  • Ringo Starr

This lineup would record all of the band's major albums.
