What Was the First Beatles Song Recorded?

The first song recorded by The Beatles during a professional EMI session was Love Me Do.

The band recorded the track on 6 June 1962 at EMI Studios in Abbey Road, London, under the supervision of producer George Martin.

At this stage the group's drummer was Pete Best, who would soon be replaced by Ringo Starr.

The First Abbey Road Recording Session

During the session The Beatles recorded several songs including:

  • Love Me Do
  • Besame Mucho
  • Ask Me Why

George Martin recognised the band's potential but expressed concerns about the quality of the drumming.

This ultimately contributed to the decision to replace Pete Best.

Re-Recording Love Me Do

After Ringo Starr joined the band in August 1962, Love Me Do was recorded again.

A later version also featured session drummer Andy White.

Release of the First Beatles Single

Love Me Do was released on 5th October 1962 as the band's first single.

The song reached No.17 in the UK charts, marking the beginning of The Beatles' recording success.
